Thursday evening open thread

I had some baseline tests for glaucoma and a couple of other age eye things related things today, and I'm exactly average for my age. There is currently no sign of glaucoma, but I do have some risk factors, aside from age, so I go back in about a year and a half to see where I'm at.

The cipralex seems to be kicking in pretty quickly with a slightly floaty, calm buzz. So that's good. I'm only on half a dose for the first couple of weeks, and if this keeps up, I'll ask the doc if I can just keep it here, rather than go on the full dose.

Merry Wednesday, Mr. Lawrence OT

Something at Cannes tickled both Nagisa Ōshima and that weird pale guy next to him.

Movie's from 1983. Bowie would've been in his mid-thirties, Ōshima in his early fifties. Ryuichi Sakamoto (not pictured here but he debuted as both actor and film score composer in Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence) would have been around thirty.

So what's amusing you?

Sunday Evening 🥅T

In honour of the start of a new shinny season, here's a couple of  trailblazers in women's hockey.

Back in 1956, little Abigail "Ab" Hoffman convinced her parents to let her go to tryouts for a hockey league, since the notice didn't specifically say it was for boys- it was assumed. No one noticed Ab was a girl until she was chosen for the all-star team and had to show her birth certificate to join. Needless to say she wasn't allowed to register for the next season.

For the U.Sians among us.

Nothing much going on here. I am pondering whether I should get a cat for Biscuit though. He might love a new cat friend, but I'm not sure I can take the chance that he might get too stressed out about it.

It's that most wonderful time of the week, where we get to let loose on what's been really, really bugging us. So go ahead, de-bug.

Monday Night Standoff Before Thanksgiving

Everyone's favorite day is today. Hope you survived work and an enjoy some time to yourselves this week, USians. It's just another week for those in another part of the world, but I hope you enjoy yourselves too.

Chow Yun-Fat, City on Fire, 1987, Ringo Lam. I think it's about Thanksgiving dinner with family.

If you have family to see this week, you have my sympathies. The holidays are all about regrets.

 Good evening.

It is Friday, November 17th, 2023. "Last Look"

Fur Face Friday!

Hi all, we've reached another Friday (I think, this week has flown by), so let's get to the Fur Faces! Last week brought a bunch of cuteness so let's pick some of the best!

First up is Reggie who found a chair that was barely soft enough to rest in:

Gradually feeling better; drugs are good!

Still hitting "refresh" on all the dog rescue sites, but there are only puppies and very large dogs being added, if any, except for the one sweet girl who is only 2 but requires a raw diet, supplements and glucosamine "for her back leg". No explanation as to what is wrong with her back leg. She needs someone who can afford her.

It's a Wednesdayful Life

Happy H Day. I've already had my fill of Christmas and it's only the 15th of November. Enjoy this Academy Award winning short film by Peter Capaldi, starring Richard E. Grant as Franz K. I assume you've all seen this before, but in case you have not:

That's right, the 12th Doctor has an Oscar. I don't know what a Scottish shaggy dog tale is like, but I imagine it's similar to this. Have a wonderful Wednes day.

Lundi OT – Bon Anniversaire

Good evening, citizens, and welcome to Monday the 13th. The 11th was our 19th wedding anniversary (spouse and mine, not backtalk's) so we exchanged gifts. For her: the LoA edition of Hainish Novels & Stories, Vol. 1*; Menewood by Nicola Griffith, sequel to Hild (2013); and Emily Wilson's new translation of The Iliad

Scholar and ink enthusiast Emily Wilson

A yearlong subscription to the Criterion Channel for me. I think I got the better of the deal. Which has always been true in regard to our relationship anyway.
