Thursday evening open thread

Saw the periodontist today and got a special CT scan to see how the jaw is healing from the extraction. They'll call me when they get the results and then I guess we schedule the post implant.

Also; I rented a car for August; a Prius, which I've never driven. And I did get a pretty good deal; $1700 for the entire month (Enterprise charged me $2000 for two weeks a couple of years ago), and he said that if I rent for 3 months next year, he'll give me an even better deal.

Wednesday Last OT – Music Why?

Anyone still have 8-tracks or cassettes? 78s? Part of my semi-embarrassing collection of music from my high school years, unpacked from a moving box in 2015 and now safely tucked away in the attic:

The Mighty Lemon Drops. Smithereens. Green on Red. Let's Active. U2. Phil Collins era Genesis. Alphaville. The dubs below would mean I had them on vinyl. Yeesh. Somewhere in the house there's a box with Pink Floyd, Bad Company, The Guess Who, Boston, and MORE!

Wednesday the 29th Backtalk Morning in the US

Hope your workday goes smoothly. Your summer vacation is coming up right? How's your unlimited paid time off plan working out?

Tuesday OT – No Sleep Till Brooklyn

Feels like I caught the wild thing baby just a week ago. Opened her eyes for a moment and went back to sleep without a peep.

Sunday Evening ⚾️T

This afternoon I almost saw a baseball game. I left a little late, then ran into a former work friend I hadn't seen in ages and had a chat. Finally arrived at the park only to realize I lost my team ballcap somewhere enroute. Decided to retrace my steps a few blocks but ended up with mission creep and retraced them back so far in the end I decided it wasn't worth it to turn around and go back. I didn't find my hat. ๐Ÿ˜ข I did get an ice cream.

It’s your weekly Photo Gallery! Come on in, take a look at what people have been up to over the past week and share some of your own photos.

They don’t need to be taken with a fancy camera or works of art. Share any SFW photos you’ve taken with even the poorest of potatoes. Of course we love to see that arty stuff too.

☀️DAY AM OT

Hope you’re having a good weekend. Be sure to fit some relaxation time in there somewhere.

Wednesday Open Thread the Last – Two Nonagenarians

Ninety+ year olds in the news: RIP, Alice Munro who died at 92. I haven't read much of her work but have enjoyed the stories I have. She won a Nobel Prize and had two movies adapted from her stories, and 92 is pretty good. A career any writer would envy but it's always sad when a good one passes. At least I wasn't reading her work when she died.

Gordon Pinsent and Julie Christie in Away from Her, Sarah Polley, 2006. Based on
"The Bear Came Over the Mountain" by Alice Munro. The cast is terrific. Nice to see
Olympia Dukakis and Michael Murphy. (Murphy and Christie were in
McCabe & Mrs Miller and Nashville by Robert Altman. – trivia-minded SQRL)

Wednesday Open Thread the First

Hope the people west of me are doing OK. Sounds like a horrible mess. Winds are still ~ 25 mph here.
Please check in and say "Hi," so we know you're alive.
The news in general is bleak and terrifying, and this particular item isn't necessarily a happy story tho it has a killer title, but at least it's visually rewarding. Per the AP, "Mexico’s often violent disputes between street performers reached a new level this week when a group of guitar-toting mariachis attacked a flame-swallower. What happened next was, perhaps, predictable."

Mon Day May XXth OT – Doc, I would like a second opinion...

Lorrie Moore won the National Book Critics Circle Award for I Am Homeless If This Is Not My Home in March. She's long been one of my favorite short story writers, but I Am Homeless... is the first novel of hers I've read. She's very funny and twisted, there's a sharp edge to her humor. There's a darkness even in her earliest stories, and they've only gotten darker. Themes and humor have remained pretty consistent overall. There's a cancer, sometimes literally, behind every joke. A pun or a riddle at the end of the world. I love her and have been slowly rereading the collections of her work I have in the house.

This is the cover of the copy I own (1990)

Sunday evening ⚾️T

Back to the field of skunk dreams for another season! It was a little sunny for the team's unofficial mascots to make an appearance.

Can you spot the tip of the CN Tower?

It was a pretty good turn out. Everyone was crowded into the shade under the big leafy tree to my left. Sadly, the home team lost a two run advantage in the 7th to lose to the visitors.

I can also report that they. Sold. Beer. In a public park! In Toronto the Good! On a Sunday! We're actually officially allowed to drink in a designated area around the ball park.

To understand how astounding this is you need to know that some neighbourhoods were dry by city bylaw until very, very recently. In fact, Ontario had laws to prohibit sports on Sundays which weren't relaxed until the 60s. The provincial Lord's Day Act wasn't repealed until 80s.

Thursday evening open thread

It's a gorgeous day here, which I have wasted napping, which segues into; I went to my doctor today for a number of things, including asking why I'm so sleepy all the time, and she asked if I snore, and I said that I knew she was going to think of sleep apnea. So she's scheduling me for a sleep study.

I also mentioned restless legs at night, and she suggested trying a glass of tonic water, which contains quinine, and might help. So I burst out, "That reminds me! That's why the British colonials would drink gin and tonics all time, because quinine is used to malaria"

Wednesday night is all right open thread

It’s not Saturday but here’s an earworm for you anyway.

Like a 16 Wheeler Jackknifing at 60 MPH Across the Median and Into Your Lane, Wednesday Is Unavoidable, and This Is the OT

On a Zoom call with my wife and the kid's psychologists. Wife is in a conference room at work. We are reviewing a 20+ page report of kid's observed behavior. Dead boring and anxiety provoking in equal measure. About thirty minutes into the meeting, I notice my image in the corner fidgeting and wonder how long I've been doing so. Worse, my chair creaks loudly, and it seems any burst of sound brings the image of the noisemaker to the fore. I'm wondering how often I popped up on the other participants' screens, just rocking or fixing my glasses or fussing with my collar. To them I probably look like I'm doing Chair Yoga*.

Arms Akimbo, He Boomed Laughter and Declared, "Nothing Beats a Russian Waterfall!" Monday PM (for some) OT

Having worked as a bookseller, I've heard more author names and book titles butchered than most. OWYAC probably has some doozies. I want to make clear I'm not making fun of people's ignorance. Quite the opposite. These people noticed lacunae in their episteme and were willing to risk a tiny bit of dignity to increase their knowledge of the world. Ordinary bravery. I appreciate them.

Isabelle Huppert, Godard's Passion from 1982. Probably the Godard work I've seen the most times.
Three day rental period back when video stores were a thing, so I watched it seven
or eight times in two days trying to make sense of it.
