Labour Day Eve OT

 Greetings from Lake Huron! 

Flora and I are spending the last summer long weekend in the Saugeen/ Bruce Peninsula. The internet here is intermittent so I'll drop in to chat if I can. I scheduled the post while I had a good connection. 

So far I've visited Bruce National Park and hiked a bit of the Bruce Trail- it goes all the way to Niagara! I just walked a few kilometers from Halfway Log Dump towards High Dump.

Today in 1917 Jack Kirby was born.  He helped create Captain America while working for Timely Comics (now Marvel). Worked with National Comics Publications (now DC). He also served in the European Theater during WW2.

I have a couple of recs to share. Balkers with Costco memberships, you have to pick up this snack mix. It's not very hot or sweet, but it's completely addictive.

Daniella Mestyanek Young's Uncultured. Holy moly, this book. It’s an intense read. All the trigger warnings - child exploitation, physical, and sexual abuse in this memoir about growing up in the Children of God cult. And how her experiences made her vulnerable to the cult like aspects of the US Army. She’s careful with her descriptions though. I have so much admiration for her. She not only survived but eventually thrived. Her next book, The Culting of America, will be released in January.

It's time for the World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest. And I'm putting in a shameless plug for Tiki. The People article provides little information about the dogs. But I follow Tiki's foster mom, Isabel Klee, on TikTok, so I'm familiar with this brave little guy's story.

Klee fosters difficult-to-place dogs and is often their last hope. You can watch her love these animals back to adoptable pets on YouTube as well as TikTok. But be prepared to cry.
