It's Steve Buscemi's 64th Birthday
Joe Strummer, Rick Aviles, and Steve Buscemi in Mystery Train, 1989 |
A lot of famous babies were born today, but Buscemi's my favorite, narrowly beating out Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, and she's only up there because of a Kinks song. He seems like a self-aware, intelligent person.
10 Things I Know About Steve:
- Worked as a firefighter in New York before becoming an actor
- After 9/11, helped clear rubble to search for survivors, working 12 hour shifts for four days
- Refused to fix his gnarly teeth because his roles as outcasts, weirdos, creeps would dry up
- Worked with Scorsese, the Coen Bros, Altman, Jarmusch, Zwigoff, Tarantino
- Seems to be in every Adam Sandler comedy
- He did not find the "Steve Buscemi eyes" meme amusing. His wife, Jo Andres did.
- She died almost three years ago
- Appeared in a Beastie Boys documentary and a Joe Strummer video
- Mr. Pink is a partial inspiration for Pink's stage name, at least according to Pink
- Considered refusing to play Donny in The Big Lebowski because he felt sorry for the character
One of my favorite Buscemi roles is still Charley the barber from Mystery Train. Probably still my favorite Jarmusch.

Fun SQRL Fact: the actor who plays Elvis's ghost in the middle chapter is Stephen Jones, who a few years after MT would marry Paula Corbin of Arkansas. Yep, that Paula Jones.
So how are you doing?
