Monday Evening OT - The Return of...

Bowie died on January 10th, 2016. That was a terrible year. I think you all remember. Special thanks to "M" for reminding us in the Saturday OT.

First Bowie song I heard: Space Oddity

First album I heard: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars

First album I bought: Hunky Dory

Most recently listened to: Aladdin Sane (Dec. 18)

First song that popped up when I shuffled Bowie: What in the World from Low

Songs I used to sing to the kids at bedtime: Kooks and Life on Mars (both from Hunky Dory), but Life on Mars was a bit toooo exciting and they sang along, surely sounding like a couple of drunken hobbits belting Bowie when they should be sleeping.

Favorite Bowie-related album: Symphony #4, "Heroes" by Philip Glass

Favorite homage: Bowie from season 1 of Flight of the Conchords

Favorite tv show appearance: season 1 of Extras.

Favorite film role: Agent Philip Jeffries in Fire Walk With Me. But you knew I'd say that. He probably would have reprised his role in TP: the Return had he not been ill. As it was, Jeffries was voiced by Nathan Frizzell, jr as a sentient orb emitted from a giant inter dimensional teakettle. It makes total sense if you watch it.*

Favorite cover of a Bowie song used in a car commercial: Cat Power, Space Oddity, Lincoln luxury vehicles

Favorite lawsuit: his lawyers sued Trent Reznor because A Warm Place sounded almost exactly like Crystal Japan. Reznor realized right away that he'd subconsciously stolen it, and he and Bowie were very chummy about it. Later pressings of The Downward Spiral credit Bowie as writer.

2nd favorite lawsuit: Blur purposely borrowed the chord progression and some of the lyrics from The Lodger (Fantastic Voyage and Boys Keep Swinging) for M.O.R. off of their s/t album (1997). Bowie's lawyers were not amused by the homage.

I've listened to most of his work but will always love his 70s output best. Least to most favorite LPs, subject to hourly mercurial whims:
