she was also a pianist - her mother wanted her to do strictly classical music but she learned jazz by ear
(I didn't know till now she & I had that in common)
Juanita Tolliver has written a new book about her
and this is something she would likely have said (or written) -- and/but if you look closely you'll see that it's actually a contemporary statement (we'll have more on that in comments)
I'm feeling under the weather this weekend (literally crashed out Thursday night with a monster sore throat - probably after overworking in "nobody else was going to do it" mode) but I'm wishing everyone here a weekend more like this
