Thursday evening open thread

Pretty quiet here; what about where you are? It looks like we might get more rain tonight, after a nice sunny day, which is the way to do ...

Goodbye July Saturday

It is Jump for Jelly Beans Day. Higher! You are going to have to do better than that.  Mind you, I prefer Jelly Babies myself.

It's also Cotton Candy Day, Mutt's Day, Avocado Day, Shredded Wheat Day, World Ranger Day, amongst others. On this day in 1703, Daniel Defoe was put in the stocks for committing seditious libel. He was pelted with flowers. And fifty years ago this day, the Lunar Rover got it's first drive with James B Irwin and David Scott behind the wheel.

Something else we have in common with Cats. But not Mice, John.

Cat with Four Ears.

Cooler than Football.

Gilgamesh Tablet Taken.

Largest star sapphire cluster found in backyard.

Bison Rangers for Kent Woodland.

Krispy Kestrel anyone?

The MP who faked his death. I have a memory of my Uncle Alvin telling my Dad about his encounter with John Stonehouse. A social worker, Alvin was representing a chap who had got himself in some kind of muddle and faced the possibility of prison or deportation. Maybe both. Surely a friendly word from the local MP might help sooth the waters? Not on your Nellie! Stonehouse just couldn't be bothered to look at the case. When Stonehouse was found in Australia it pretty much confirmed Alvin's feeling that the MP was a waste of space.

A schoolfriend's dad was a policeman and it fell upon him and colleagues to drive Stonehouse to court during his trial. Apparently there were a few tantrums along the way which included an attempt to jump out the car while it was moving.

Sea Scooter riders face criticism. Mooching around Lidl the other day, there was a box which had a picture of a camera at the top. First thought was that it was some kind of studio kit? No. A drone perhaps? No. Some kind of garden appliance? None of that. It was a sea scooter. Yours for 250 quid.

So, how many Jelly Beans do we have in the jar today?
