O Wednesday With Thine Crepuscular Lights Shimmering Into Silence

January, I hardly knew ye. Wednesday OT

Snowy day. Snow day, in fact, for the kids. Spouse is WFH today anyway (Fri, 1/12) so I'm hiding out in the study until they go back to school and work... four days from now. If they need me they know where to find me, but they should figure some things out for themselves, ya ask me.

Snow and a big freeze following. Good. Can't talk about the dregs, butt end, or ash heap of winter without some blackened mounds of chemically preserved snow lingering well into April.

Monday Nightswimming, a River, a Moon (and ROM: Spaceknight)

Apropos of nothing at all, I was singing "Moon River" and it morphed into "Goldfinger". Happens every time, my huckleberry friends.

Similarly, Handel's Judas Maccabeus becomes "Frosty the Snowman" which in turn always transforms into "Rudolph". Means nothing but aural confusion in an addled brain which is prone to tangents anyway.

Sunday evening 🌖T

Good evening/ night/ morning, how's it going?

Not sure if this is good or bed news vis à vis climate change. Remember the huge explosion caused by the underwater volcano near Tonga?

On the one hand, the water from the volcano is contributing to the green house effect and making our weather wonky. On the other hand, the effect of the water won't last forever and in the meantime its effects might focus everyone a little more on addressing carbon emissions.  Maybe that's overly optomistic?

Here's an interview with a scientist in NZ on the CBC Radio's science show, Quirks and Quarks:

And for some anxiety relief, here's a couple adorable deer.

They don’t need to be taken with a fancy camera or works of art. Share any SFW photos you’ve taken with even the poorest of potatoes. Of course we love to see that arty stuff too.

Good morning

Hi there. It’s Sunday and this is an open thread.

Thursday evening open thread

I have no clue how I'll be feeling on Thursday, so I'm composing it on Tuesday. I may or may not check in, depending on how alert and chipper I feel.

Wndensdaty Later OT

Did ... didja ever wonder if we're just antennae on the head of god, and and and like we could walk through tables and ... no? Well, bummer, dudes and dudettes. Talk about something else instead.

Oh Wednesday, Oh Wednesday, OT Wednesday

Young kid's grades for three classes are below C level. Several incomplete assignments in Social Studies, French, and Language Arts. I told her it's unacceptable to flunk a class in public school for Pete's sake. That takes serious disabilities or at the very least, a colossal lack of effort. Warned her that "If you don't catch your work up, there will be no Twin Peaks this weekend." That's the best warning I've ever uttered.

Don't Overlook the Monday Night OT

Feeling snowed in this past week (Central US), but at least I got to read* between shoveling and Costco trips. Double digits in the positive for the last few days, still below freezing but substantially warmer than the -10° about a week ago. Sneezing signals more snow to come.

Thursday evening open thread

An uneventful day here. It turned sunny in the afternoon, and I did go out for a walk.

The exterminator was around to restock the bait stations, which were all empty, which isn't good, because it means the rats have been pretty active. On the other hand, it has been a warm winter so far, so that makes sense. I mentioned the mouse and said that I'm trying to catch it myself, but may end calling them.

Hopefully anyone having a bad week gets the chance to hide under the blankies for a little bit at least. If not, complain away here!

Today in 1644, the Pilgrims reported seeing a UFO over Boston Harbor. Governor John Winthrop has several stories in his diary of lights in the sky, unexplained voices, and people being transported miles away.
