Pretty quiet here; what about where you are? It looks like we might get more rain tonight, after a nice sunny day, which is the way to do ...

It Was Nina Simone’s Birthday Long Before It Was Some Fascist Wet Dream Called National Hate Day – Saturday Night OT

Promised everyone some movies that, despite merit, might've flown under the radar (in part bc of who controls the radar)

These are more modern than the great historical list presented for us in comments last week - though much of that history is also mandatory viewing at some point, imo - especially for "history of cinema" types

Woman King – directed by Gina Prince Bythewood, nominated for 2 BAFTAs & 2 Critics Choice Awards but no Oscars

My Q to lead people to my personal thesis about why that is is to ask why, in the history of films the Academy has permitted to be made about both slavery and Black Americans, there’ve been a number of films made centering around racist stereotypes, and films that focus on the pain of slavery, but almost none portraying sustained resistance or the number of slave rebellions (they are better known when you know where to look)

Get Out - directed & co-written by Jordan Peele (won an original screenplay Oscar)

It’s the writer-director’s quote that sticks with me the most about this movie, especially during Our Times Now

Do the Right Thing - director, Spike Lee

2 Oscar nominations, no wins

LA Film Critics Award, Best Film

Race  - a Jesse Owens story - starring Stephan James

The scene that sticks with me is one a lot of African American vets coming home from more than one American war also faced – winning victory and glory for the United States overseas and then not being permitted, sometimes even for awards dinners celebrating their contributions & achievements, from being able to enter through the front door

Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor – and from the US “Academy”, nothing

Black KKKlansman - speaks for itself (yes, John David Washington is the Son of Denzel)

Cannes Grand Prix Academy Award, Best Writing

BAFTA, Award for Best Adapted Screenplay

from the Academy, nothing

There are so many more - that's just a sampling

We're going to need as many info sources as possible to blunt attacks of those who glory in misinformation to justify violence, since that's not any fun ... eventually, not even for them

(one more time for the people in the back)
