“Read Banned Books” Week Should Be A Month and Then Extended Indefinitely: Saturday Night OT

From last year ^^

Banned Books Week has little to do with books that are banned in totalitarian countries such as China, Cuba or Saudi Arabia.

Instead, it has everything to do with actual or attempted bans of books here in the United States of America, supposed pinnacle of free speech.

The American Library Association and other publishing-related organizations have been sponsoring the week since 1982 to draw attention to ongoing efforts to remove or prohibit certain books in classrooms, school libraries and public libraries.

Apparently more books have been banned in 2021 & 2022 in the United States than in any year since 2000

We know book bans stifle intellectual growth, limit access to diverse perspectives, & infringe upon individual autonomy

In the interest of at least an attempt to maintain nonpartisan POV in this post (on a weekend, no less), all I'd ask is people consider why it might be that the people who screech the most about “MAH FREEDUMS” also appear to be the most active (and most forcible) in pulling literal Fahrenheit 451s and setting books on fire

I'm sure a whole lot of us figured it was too on the nose

And to broaden our minds (and music libraries)
