I discovered today that the mouse has managed to get into the trap without tripping the trap. Apparently I put the peanut butter bait to far forward, and it could get it without tripping the mechanism. This is actually good, because it means that it IS coming and and it now sees the trap as safe. So I've reset it with a nice glob of pb at the back and it will have to get all the way in and step on the tripping plate to get the bait. I hope.
