- Christmas Island is the first place to meet the new year. American Samoa is the last.
- This will be the first year since World War 2 that Times Square will not be full with people.
- The Space Shuttle never had a mission on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day over fears that the computer system wouldn't be able to handle the rollover into a different year.
