Good evening BT. Somehow I've (re)watched enough movies this year to come up with 25* I would've paid money to watch in the theater. Let's blame garbage weather and COVID-19 as opposed to general idleness on this writer's part. I'll break them down by category cuz that's what I do.
Comedy
- Blast from the Past - Wilson, 1999
- The Square - Östlund ,2017
- Force Majeure - Östlund, 2014
- Drunken Master - Yuen, 1978
Drama
- Cool Hand Luke - Rosenberg, 1967
- Drive My Car - Hamaguchi, 2021
- Asako I & II - Hamaguchi, 2018
- Pig - Samoski, 2021
Jidaigeki
- Harakiri - Kobayashi, 1962
- The Seven Samurai - Kurosawa, 1954
- Sword of Doom - Okamoto, 1966
- Yojimbo - Kurosawa, 1961
Noir
- The Sweet Smell of Success - Mackendrick, 1957
- Scarlet Street - Lang, 1945
- Gilda - Vidor, 1946
- The Big Heat - Lang, 1953
- The Killing - Kubrick, 1956
- Pickup on South Street - Fuller, 1953
- In a Lonely Place - Ray, 1950
- Kiss Me Deadly - Aldrich, 1955
Neo(n) Noir
- The Naked Kiss - Fuller, 1964
- Branded to Kill - Suzuki, 1967
- Ghost Dog - Jarmusch, 1999
- Le Samouraï - Melville, 1967
- Badlands - Malick, 1973
No horror or sci-fi on my list, hmmm.
Some of the category placement might cause dissent (except for jidaigeki - that's clearly defined). I'm not going to argue. You build your shelves your way, I'll keep doing it mine.
I haven't been to a movie theater since Parasite and miss those little plague boxes with the gigantic pretty big magic lantern show.
So what's new with you, BackTalk crew?
* Out of the 86 movies I've seen this year. Seems like a lot but that's fewer than 4 a week.
