though I'm not sure "End of the World as We Know It" by REM is a fair answer (not leastwise bc I'm not sure who could sing the verse's coda with conviction), we'll allow it
this one is harder in the era of the remake - I always thought nobody could outdo Oprah as Sofia in the original "Color Purple" - though I'm having a harder time replacing Faye Dunaway as Diana Christensen from "Network" I am certainly not saying it could not be done
