Today in 1938, a young Orson Welles performed a dramatic telling of H G Wells “War of the Worlds”. The next day he had a press conference where he said “If I’d planned to wreck my career, I couldn’t have gone about it better”
The stories of panic in the streets maybe over blown, especially since the start of the performance had a warning that this was a show. Still not everyone picked up the beginning of the Mercury Theater, and the breaking news interrupting a different show cliche hadn’t been done before.
Orson went on to a successful career, to his best work, cranky spokesman.
