Backtalk: A Medium Place
A New Orleans style cafe briefly operated near the bookstore where I worked as a manager in the nineties. Chicory coffee and beignets were recommended, but the flavor of chicory never grew on me, and no caffeine is a definite dealbreaker. I used to stop by during lunch breaks. The owner, originally from NOLA, was nice and chatty about its rich musical history. I'm a good, thoughtful listener - or at least appear to be so - and a lot of people tell me way too much.

What's your earliest memory? Roughly how old were you? Did your parents tell you what your first words were? I moved to the US at the age of four so my memories are clearly divided into Before the US and After. The earliest memory I have is probably from two years of age.

I watched John Huston's Wise Blood last week. Other than being set in the 70s instead of the late 40s/early 50s of O'Connor's book, it was remarkable in its faithful adherence to her story. Kept most of the memorable lines from the book. " No man with a good car needs to be justified!"

Star Wars premiered on May 25th, 1977. I didn't see it until sometime in late summer after I turned 7. I remember waiting in the loooong line for tickets and wanting to go home about 10 minutes after we got there.

It is our duty to die in as ridiculous a fashion as possible. I'm sorry, were you planning a slow decline in your own bed, surrounded by loved ones awaiting your last gasp and perhaps the last bits of your hard-earned wisdom? Screw that. Go tease a buffalo. Blast yourself from a cannon aimed at your worst enemy's home. Invent an extreme sport like "Sky Boating". Boldly go. Without pants.

It's the last line of Jubilate Agno (Rejoice in the Lamb), fragment B by Christopher Smart, about his cat. Smart was confined in St. Luke's Hospital for Lunatics, London, in 1757, but he was released a year later, before being admitted again to some other asylum(s) for the next seven years, nobody knows where exactly. That's when and where he wrote this poem - his best known, and of course recognized well after his passing. Fortunately, "religious mania" was considered a "curable lunacy" and he was able to die penniless in debtor's prison. Lucky devil. Such is the life of a poet.
